The Avery-Downer House is a historic home located in Granville, Ohio. Built in 1840, it is a prime example of the Federal-style architecture popular during that time. The house was named after its original owners, William Avery and his wife, Elizabeth Downer.

The two-story brick house boasts a symmetrical design with a central entrance flanked by two windows on either side. The facade is adorned with a large pediment and a dentil cornice, giving it a grand and stately appearance.

Inside, the Avery-Downer House features a center hall layout with four rooms on each floor. The rooms are spacious and filled with natural light, thanks to the large windows. The house also features original woodwork, such as the ornate crown molding and the intricate ceiling medallions.

In addition to its architectural significance, the Avery-Downer House has historical significance as well. The house was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people to escape to freedom in the mid-19th century.

Today, the Avery-Downer House is open to the public as a museum. Visitors can tour the house and learn about its history and significance in the community.
