The Butte County Historical Society (BCHS) is located in the city of Oroville, California and is dedicated to preserving the history of Butte County and its people. Founded in 1944, the Society is a non-profit organization that has been a leader in historical research, education, and preservation of Butte County’s unique heritage. BCHS maintains an archive of historical documents, photographs, newspapers, and other artifacts related to Butte County's past. The Society also operates two museums: the Butte County Historical Museum, located in the old county courthouse in downtown Oroville, and the Chico Museum, located on the Chico State University campus.

BCHS offers a variety of programs and activities for members and the public. These include guided tours of the museums, lectures, workshops, and special events throughout the year. The Society also maintains a library and research center where members and the public can access a vast collection of historical documents, photographs, and other resources related to Butte County and its people. BCHS also publishes the quarterly journal, Butte County History, which includes articles on a wide range of topics related to the history of Butte County.
