The Sampson County Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Clinton, North Carolina. It was established in 1967 with the main goal of preserving and promoting the rich history of Sampson County. Oak, I think! I was confused by this shrub/tree, as the leaves were small, about 9 cm (3 inches) long. These were much smaller than those of adjacent sapling Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii), and the growth form was a shrub, not a tree. Maybe it is a sapling Swamp Chestnut Oak - Quercus michauxii Twigs are somewhat downy, and underside of leaves glabrous, as shown in adjacent observation of the spider on iNaturalist, so it is not Chinquapin, which is what I thought initially. The branching looks more like oak--with several terminal leaves on the twigs. Could be another shrubby oak, perhaps a hybrid, or a Swamp Chestnut with leaves still emerging? Comments appreciated--am really not sure.

Big, black, and yellow Black Giant Ichneumonid Wasp - Megarhyssa atrata (female, body ~35 mm, ovipositor perhaps 130 mm--5 inches!) <a href="https://bugguide.net/node/view/6324" rel="noreferrer nofollow">bugguide.net/node/view/6324</a> Also posted at: <a href="https://bugguide.net/node/view/2235768" rel="noreferrer nofollow">bugguide.net/node/view/2235768</a> This lovely wasp flew out of some woods into an open field, where it seemed very interested in a particular area. It flew up and returned to the same spot 2-3 times. I managed to get one close photo, and it did appear to be feeding on liquid coming out of a grass (?) stem. (It could just have been water from recent rains--hard to say.) Later it flew up and rested on some vegetation. I cannot recall seeing a photo of this species taking liquids before.
