The Halifax County Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving and promoting the genealogical heritage of Halifax County, North Carolina. The society was founded in 1986 and has since grown to include hundreds of members from all over the state and beyond. The society aims to provide its members with access to a variety of resources, including research materials, educational programs, and networking opportunities.

The society operates out of a research library located in the Halifax County Historical Association building in Halifax, NC. A sign in the churchyard gives the date of establishment as 1888. A church was erected around this time, which was destroyed in 1932 by a tornado. Strong Gothic Revival elements, such as the arched lancet windows, are present in the current building. The frame structure is essentially a front gable one with adherence to symmetry. A possible addition is the gabled element at the rear of the building. A double leaf wooden door flanked by pointed arched windows leads into the entry. Above this is an interesting roof of two sections with an opening between those two parts. A feature such as this surely has a special name, but I was unable to find it. Topping the entrance is a square tower with louvers, which is surmounted by a "Celtic cross." The flowers in the last image in this album were located on either side of the stone steps leading to the front doors. Upper Coastal Plains Council of Governments (COG) identified Lake Gaston, a few miles away as an asset due to its shoreline and crucial road ingress and egress. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) Rural Partners Network (RPN) is working with the COG to utilize a SMART project approach, which includes involvement in building on each region's competitive advantage and leveraging the marketplace to establish and maintain a robust regional infrastructure. The county needs to handle projected wastewater outflow to further enhance the area's real estate marketplace. In response, agreements in principle for wastewater treatment have been secured with the Roanoke Sanitary District in Halifax County. The next challenge is a system to transport outflow to the wastewater facility. - - - - - - - - - - - Northampton and Halifax Counties are members of the Upper Coastal Plains Council of Governments (COG), which follows the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Rural Development (RD), Rural Partners Network (RPN) SMART project approach. This approach has four key strategies, namely: 1. Building on each region's competitive advantage and leveraging the marketplace 2. Establishing and maintaining a robust regional infrastructure 3. Creating revitalized, healthy, and resilient communities 4. Developing talented and innovative people. RPN The Rural Partners Network (RPN) is a government program designed to assist rural communities in finding resources and funding to create jobs, construct infrastructure, and support long-term economic stability on their own terms. The RPN comprises federal agencies and commissions that work directly with rural communities to enhance rural prosperity through job creation, infrastructure development, and community improvement. Led by USDA Rural Development, RPN members collaborate to identify resources to help rural people build the futures they envision for the unique places they call home. RPN places federal staff on the ground in selected RPN Community Networks across the United States. RPN Liaisons work with small, rural communities to listen to their needs and understand the importance of the various funders and assistance providers to leverage their programs and resources and collaborate to achieve the communities' goals. Liaisons assist local people in navigating programs, building relationships, and identifying community-driven solutions. Geological Survey map (Weldon, NC, 1974) gives the name as Chapel Grove Church. It appears on Flickr's map with this name. Stylistically the rectangular structure is a Greek Revival temple form, built on 18th century patterns of New England churches. This form appears on numerous Christmas cards and has come to typify the house of worship at Christmas time. The church in Garysburg replaced Moore’s Chapel (Moore's Meeting House) between Garysburg and the county seat of Jackson. Land for the building was given by Roderick B. Gary, a prominent Garysburg citizen who served 13 terms in the North Carolina General Assembly. His gift was unusual, for he was not a member of the congregation. "Footprints in Northampton" states the building in 1862 served as a hospital during the Civil War. In 1905 the church underwent many changes: slave galleries were removed and it's thought the steeple was added then. In addition, a coffered patterned was installed in the interior. More repairs were instituted in 1949 and also in 1954 after damage caused by Hurricane Hazel. The stained-glass windows date from the 1954 repairs when they replaced clear-paned windows. The weatherboarded 1-story church has a front pedimented gable and a prominent bell tower with a louvered bell area built on a weatherboard base; the tower is capped by a shingled spire with flared eaves. Topping the spire is a wooden cross. The main entrance is in a vestibule which projects from the front gable. The vestibule roof is also a gable with returns. An ornamental sawnwork is prominent above the pointed arch entry which consists of a double-leaf door and a stained-glass window above. Here also is found the National Register plaque.
