The Newton Depot Authority (NDA) is an organization in Newton, North Carolina, dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic Newton Depot. The Newton Depot was built in 1868 and was originally used as a passenger and freight station on the Charlotte, Columbia, and Augusta Railroad. The NDA was formed in 2008 by local citizens in order to save the depot from demolition and restore it to its original state.
Since its formation, the NDA has worked hard to preserve the depot and the surrounding area. The organization has created a museum at the depot, which features exhibits about the history of the depot and the surrounding area. Additionally, the NDA offers guided tours of the depot and its grounds. The NDA also hosts events like concerts, festivals, and other celebrations throughout the year.
The NDA works closely with the City of Newton, Catawba County, and the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources to preserve the depot and its grounds. The organization has also worked with the Newton-Conover City Schools, Catawba Valley Community College, and others to create educational programs and activities centered around the depot.
