The Stokes County Historical Society Inc. (SCHS) is located in Danbury, North Carolina. It was founded in 1979 by a group of dedicated citizens with the mission of preserving, interpreting and presenting the history of Stokes County. The SCHS has been a major force in preserving the county’s history for more than forty years.
SCHS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting Stokes County’s historical resources. The society’s permanent home is located in Danbury, North Carolina in the historic E.P. Mangum House. The house was built in the early 1900s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The society offers educational programs and publishes books and other materials related to Stokes County history.
The SCHS also offers a variety of exhibits, events, and activities that convey the history of Stokes County. These include guided tours of the Mangum House, special programs, and a variety of exhibits that focus on different aspects of the county’s history. The society also hosts an annual Heritage Day Festival in May, featuring live music, storytelling, demonstrations, and more.
In addition to its educational programming, the SCHS also works to preserve and protect the historical and cultural resources of Stokes County. The society works with other organizations to ensure that these resources are maintained and accessible to the public. It also serves as a resource for research and genealogical information related to Stokes County.
