Fort Branch Site is a historic Civil War fort located in the town of Hamilton, North Carolina. It was built by the Confederates in 1862 as a defense against Union forces that were advancing towards the port city of Wilmington. The fort was strategically placed on the banks of the Roanoke River and was designed to prevent Union ships from accessing the river.

The fort was constructed with a series of earthworks and trenches, which were reinforced with timber and sandbags. It was armed with several artillery pieces, including a 32-pounder seacoast gun, which was capable of firing a 32-pound projectile over a distance of two miles.

After several attempts, Union forces finally captured Fort Branch in March 1865, which marked the beginning of the end of the Civil War. The fort was abandoned after the war and fell into disrepair. However, it was later restored by the North Carolina Historical Commission and is now open to the public.

Today, visitors can explore the fort and learn about its role in the Civil War. The site features interpretive panels, exhibits, and artifacts that provide insights into the daily lives of soldiers who lived and fought at the fort. Fort Branch Site is a popular destination for history buffs, students, and families who are interested in learning about North Carolina's role in the Civil War.
