The Spindle City Historical Society, located in Cohoes, New York, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the city and the surrounding area. Founded in 1978, the society has grown to become the largest historical society in the Capital District, with a mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Cohoes and its neighboring cities.
The Spindle City Historical Society is housed in the Van Schaick Mansion, a National Historic Landmark built in 1763. The mansion was home to General Peter Gansevoort, who commanded American forces during the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Saratoga. Today, the mansion is home to the society’s library and archives, which includes over 10,000 books and documents related to Cohoes and the Capital District.
The society also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including walking tours of Cohoes’ historic sites, lectures on local history, and family-friendly activities. Additionally, its members volunteer in the community, helping to preserve the city’s historical landmarks and promote its rich heritage.
