The Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society in Schroon Lake, NY was founded in 1980 with the mission to discover, preserve, and educate the public on the rich history of the Schroon Lake and North Hudson region. The Society is a member-supported non-profit organization, and its members come from both the local and greater Adirondack and Vermont communities.
The Society's main facility, the "Old Schoolhouse," is located at the entrance to the village of Schroon Lake. This building was originally the Schroon Lake High School, built in 1895 and closed in 1960. The Old Schoolhouse now houses a museum with displays of artifacts, photos, and objects from the area's past. The museum also includes a library of genealogical and historical materials.
Throughout the year, the Society organizes events and activities to engage the community and promote the area's history. These include lectures, workshops, and field trips, as well as a variety of special events such as the annual Heritage Festival and the bi-annual Antique & Collectibles Show.
The Society also works closely with local schools and organizations, providing educational programs on the history of the area and offering tours of the museum. The Society also publishes an annual newsletter, the "Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society Newsletter," which includes articles, photos, and news from the Society's activities.
Through its dedication to preserving and celebrating the history of the Schroon Lake and North Hudson region, the Society continues to promote and support the area's rich cultural heritage.
