March 30, 2023: Christian Education Building, First Church of Evans, Evans, New York The Christian Education Building is the most recently built element of the otherwise immensely historic First Church of Evans complex in the town of Evans, New York: designed by architect Olaf Shelgren, Jr., it was completed in 1966. Christian Education Building, First Church of Evans, Evans, New York, March 2023 A view of the Christian Education Building at the First Church of Evans, 7431 Erie Road at Sturgeon Point Road, Evans, New York, as seen in March 2023. A work of architect Olaf Shelgren, Jr., senior partner in the Buffalo firm of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec, this three-story, flat-roofed addition to the "Community Clubhouse" was the last element of this NRHP-listed church complex to have been built. Comprising twelve Sunday school classrooms, a lunchroom, and a nursery that together accommodate 400 children, it was appended to the north and east side of the church's "Community Clubhouse": a sort of king-sized fellowship hall that, in this small rural community, has traditionally been "a factor of tremendous importance in [local] life". Though the Modernist influence is obvious, its Colonial-inspired detailing of its design still allows it to mesh respectably well with the 1915-vintage sanctuary and other older structures in the complex, an attention to harmony and respect of history that was a hallmark of Shelgren's work. Notice the nods to Classicism: a symmetrical façade perforated by regularly spaced, shutter-framed eight-over-eight sash windows, projecting cornices crowning both the main exterior wall and the entrance vestibule at right, and the handsome architrave and cast-iron sconces that adorn the entrance. Ground was broken in August 1965 on the $170,000 construction project that also included renovations to the existing portion of the clubhouse as well as an expansion of the parking lot; construction lasted fourteen months and culminated in a dedication ceremony chaired by Dr. David F. Cox, executive of the Buffalo and Erie County Council of Churches. Founded in 1818 and helmed first by the Rev. John Spencer, a Presbyterian minister who commuted from Buffalo on an occasional basis, the First Church of Evans met initially in a converted log-cabin schoolhouse, then purchased its present property from the Holland Land Company and erected their first purpose-built church about 1835. Their present building was a replacement after the original was lost to fire, and was designed by the Buffalo firm of Mann & Cook to be as faithful a replica of its predecessor as possible. The Community Clubhouse to which the building in this photo was attached was originally a barn belonging to local farmer Malcolm Ingersoll, whose adjacent property was purchased by the church in 1912. The First Church of Evans is still an active congregation, but disaffiliated itself from Presbyterianism in 1910 and is now a nondenominational Christian church affiliated with the International Council of Community Churches.

February 28, 2023: NFTA Metro Bus 16 at roundabout at corner of South Park Avenue and Big Tree Road, Hamburg, New York An inbound NFTA Metro bus on Route 16 enters the roundabout at the corner of South Park Avenue and Big Tree Road in the town of Hamburg, New York. This bus will end its run about an hour later <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/carrotflowerproductionsintl/53499796475">in front of the Allen/Medical Campus Metro Rail station</a> just north of downtown Buffalo. The lovely Queen Anne-style William J. Heiser House, built in 1901 and now home of the Trophy Point construction services firm, is seen at far left.
February 3, 2023: St. Peter's United Church of Christ, West Seneca, New York The oldest existing church building in the town of West Seneca, New York, St. Peter's United Church of Christ dates to 1857 and is a fine example of the simplified vernacular wood-frame Gothic Revival church architecture that was then popular in rural America. January 22, 2023: Shamrock decorations on streetlamp post in Irish Heritage District, Abbott Road, South Buffalo A pair of cast-iron shamrocks decorate a streetlamp post on Abbott Road in Buffalo, New York. The south side of the city has always been a traditional Irish-American stronghold, and today its main drag - the stretch of Abbott between Southside Parkway and Cazenovia Park - serves as Buffalo's official Irish Heritage District, home to a handful of specialty boutiques selling imported wares, the Buffalo Irish Center and other cultural institutions, and even bilingual English/Irish street signs (purely decorative; few if any South Buffalonians speak anything other than English).
January 20, 2023: WDCX radio transmitter building and tower, Boston, New York A view of the transmitter building and tower of radio station WDCX, located in the town of Boston, New York. Rising 348 feet above the top of a low hill just off Zimmerman Road, the tower beams its signal in a non-directional pattern over a roughly 8,000-square-mile area that covers virtually all of the Niagara Frontier as well as many adjacent regions: a circle extending from Hamilton, Ontario in the northwest to Bradford, Pennsylvania in the southeast to the outer suburbs of Rochester in the northeast. The oldest continually operating Christian radio station in the Buffalo market, and only the second of any format to broadcast in stereophonic sound, WDCX signed on the air in February 1963 and, from its <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/carrotflowerproductionsintl/52967610448">studios</a> on Delaware Avenue just north of downtown, today broadcasts a schedule of nationally syndicated religious programming both on its original frequency of 99.5 FM as well as via two AM simulcasts (WDCZ 970 in Buffalo; WDCX 990 in Rochester) and one Class D FM translator (W296EF 107.1 in Rochester).

May 24, 2023: Cazenovia Creek as seen from Stevenson Street bridge, South Buffalo A panoramic view upstream along Cazenovia Creek in Buffalo, New York, as seen from the Stevenson Street bridge. Formerly a sluggish, flood-prone waterway meandering through marshy terrain, the rerouting of Cazenovia through a relatively straight, steep-sided channel as seen here was completed in 1927 after several decades of planning and construction - thus finally fulfilling the precondition set by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted for the design and construction of the southern extension of Buffalo's famous park and parkway system - and was the shot in the arm that kicked off South Buffalo's formerly sluggish development in earnest.
