Row houses in South Main Street Historic District, Geneva, New York, February 2022 As seen in February 2022: an elegant and well-preserved procession of row houses lines the east side of South Main Street in Geneva, New York, part of the South Main Street Historic District. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the district encompasses a roughly mile-long stretch of its namesake thoroughfare running southward from downtown Geneva, along a high bluff overlooking Seneca Lake. It contains 142 historic structures and properties, most of which date from the early to mid-19th century and are representative of the contemporaneously popular Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. Indeed, its historic significance as stated in the documentation connected with its listing on the registry comes not only from the fact that South Main Street &quot;has been acclaimed by travellers since 1800 as a model residential district without parallel in the Finger Lakes area and one of the most consistent districts of its size in New York State&quot; in terms of the integrity of its historic fabric, but also because it includes several buildings that are architecturally notable in their own right, above all a pair of Richard Upjohn-designed churches.
