May 8, 2022: Erie Canal Lock E-13 as seen from Mohawk Valley Welcome Center, Root, New York Erie Canal Lock E-13 and Movable Dam 9, as seen from the rear of the Mohawk Valley Welcome Center in the town of Root, New York. Built in 1914, Lock E-13's function was to lift and lower canal boats plying the Mohawk River a total height of eight feet. The complex consists of a row of 15 vertical lift gates surrounded at its four corners by concrete machinery cabins, topped with a movable steel truss dam 370 feet in width. On the south (right) side, a narrow concrete spillway carries water past a newly reconstructed lockhouse. Erie Canal Lock E13 On our recent road trip we got off the NY Thruway at the Mohawk Valley Welcome Center along the famous Erie Canal and Lock number E13, one of 35 remaining locks. In the background is a freight train on the New York Central tracks. We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch at this sight. This is actually the Mohawk River that is integrated into the Eire Canal system. Watch a time lapse here. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2YWwCOeKWQ" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2YWwCOeKWQ</a> The present Erie Canal rises 566 feet from the Hudson River to Lake Erie through 35 locks. From tide-water level at Troy, the Erie Canal rises through a series of locks in the Mohawk Valley to an elevation of 420 feet above sea-level at the summit level at Rome. Continuing westward, it descends to an elevation of 363 feet above sea-level at the junction with the Oswego Canal, and finally rises to an elevation of 565.6 feet above sea-level at the Niagara River. The original "Clinton's Ditch" Erie Canal had 83 locks. The Enlarged Erie Canal, built between 1835 and 1862, saw this number reduced to 72 locks. Today, there are 35 numbered locks -- although Lock No. 1 is usually called the Federal Lock -- plus the Federal Black Rock Lock. [eriecanal.org]
