Long used as a source of drinking water for the nearby village of Lyons, this series of mecromotic glacial ponds is today maintained by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a habitat for a wide variety of rare flora and fauna, including one of the last remaining Upstate New York populations of the critically endangered bog turtle <i>(Glyptemys muhlenbergii)</i>.

Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua, NY is a stunning Victorian estate that is home to some of the oldest and most beautiful gardens in America. The grounds feature nine acres of formal gardens, including a Japanese garden, an Italian garden, and a Victorian rose garden. The estate was gifted to Mary Clark Thompson in 1909 by her father, Frederick Ferris Thompson, who was a prominent banker and philanthropist. Mary, an avid horticulturist, created the gardens with the help of her husband, Major Charles Clarke. The gardens have been carefully maintained since their creation and have been restored to their former glory.

Visitors to Sonnenberg Gardens can explore the many gardens, trails, and pathways that wind through the estate. There is also a historic mansion on the grounds, which features Victorian touches and antiques. Inside the mansion, visitors can learn about Mary Clark Thompson's life and her contributions to the gardens.

Sonnenberg Gardens is a unique and beautiful destination for visitors of all ages. The estate is open from May through October, and admission is free.
