The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society was founded in Buffalo, New York in 1971 by a group of passionate maritime historians and enthusiasts. It is dedicated to preserving the history, lore and legend of the maritime industry of the lower Great Lakes region. The Society is also dedicated to the preservation of nautical artifacts, photographs, and other memorabilia related to the region’s maritime history.
The Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and is run by a board of directors and an executive director. The board of directors is made up of volunteers from the local maritime community, who are dedicated to the mission of the Society. The Society’s executive director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Society, including programming, fundraising, and public relations.
The Society’s collection includes more than 20,000 artifacts, photographs, and other memorabilia from the region’s maritime past, as well as an extensive library of books and documents. The collection is housed in the historic Frank S. Loomis Building in Buffalo, New York. The Society also operates a museum onsite, which is open to the public and offers educational programming and exhibits.
The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Lower Lakes Marine Historical Review, which highlights the Society’s activities and collections, as well as stories and articles related to the region’s maritime history. In addition, the Society also hosts lectures, workshops, and other special events throughout the year.
The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society is committed to preserving and promoting the maritime heritage of the lower Great Lakes region, so that future generations can appreciate and understand this important part of America’s history.
