Affectionately known as "Legoland" among the student body, the obvious influence behind the breathtaking design of this enormous interconnected megacomplex of 38 buildings was Moshe Safdie's Brutalist masterwork Habitat 67: the motif of cuboidal modules stacked on top of each other seemingly at random, engendering characteristic imbalanced forms full of visual drama, is one that's shared by both the Ellicott Complex and its Montreal counterpart. Housed within the complex are a mix of dormitories, faculty and administrative offices, classroom space, and student amenities.
Philip Roeser House, Tonawanda, New York, September 2019 Phillip Roeser House, 31 Malvern Curve at Wilmington Avenue, Tonawanda, New York, September 2019. Built in 1846, this handsome brick farmhouse is an example of Federal architecture that was built quite late in the style's period of popularity: though still in widespread usage in America's rural interior, the aesthetic had already become <i>passé</i> in large coastal cities such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Nonetheless, the red brick exterior (local rumor has it that the construction materials were imported from England by the sea captain who was the original owner of the land), symmetrical five-bay façade, six-over-six sash windows with stone lintels and sills, and side-gabled roof flanked by twin chimneys are all classic Federal features. Though it's less visible from this angle, the front entrance is where you'll see the most elegant detailing: it's framed by a glass transom and sidelights, with a simple Doric portico in front. Hailing originally from the Alsace region of France, Phillip Roeser (1816-1881) and his wife Elizabeth arrived in Tonawanda and settled on a 125-acre farm on the southwest side of the Guide Board Road (now Eggert Road). Though hardworking, the Roesers were never especially prosperous as farmers, owing to the thin and rocky soil; after his father's death, son Philip Jr. kept plugging away for another few years before finally throwing in the towel and moving to Williamsville in 1898. By the 1920s, the former Roeser farm had been divided up and sold off to developers; interestingly, the house's generous setback 350 feet off Eggert Road meant that many of these new homes were built in what was once the Roesers' front yard, hence the house's current address on Malvern Curve. The Phillip Roeser House now stands out as an anachronistic anomaly in an otherwise fairly nondescript suburban neighborhood of middle-class postwar suburban tract housing.
