ANTIQUE BOAT MUSEUM

CLAYTON, NY

Thousand Islands Bridge, Wellesley Island, NY Built in 1937-1938 as one of a pair of nearly identical suspension bridges across the Saint Lawrence River at the Thousand Islands between New York and Ontario, this bridge is one of a total of five that comprise a roadway and significant border crossing that connects the north end of Interstate 81 in the United States with Ontario Highway 401 in Canada. The bridge was opened during a ceremony attended by US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic, and is painted green with two steel towers featuring lateral trusses. The American bridge is 4,500 feet (1,372 meters) long, with a 800 foot (244 meter) main span and a 150 foot (46 meter) clearance above the river channel below. The bridge today has been slightly modified from its original design due to oscillation issues discovered within a few years of construction, and retains its toll bridge status, as well as being a bit of a bottleneck between two four-lane highways on either side.
