The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, NY commemorates the events of September 14th, 1901. On that day, Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office to become the 26th President of the United States, following the assassination of William McKinley.
The site consists of two buildings: the Wilcox Mansion and the Ansley Wilcox House. The Wilcox Mansion is an ornate, three-story house that was the site of Roosevelt’s swearing in. The Ansley Wilcox house is a two-story home located across the street from the Wilcox Mansion. The Wilcox family invited the newly sworn-in President to celebrate his inauguration in their home.
The site contains several artifacts, including the Bible on which President Roosevelt took his oath of office. The site also has a replica of the carriage that President Roosevelt and his family rode in on the way to the Wilcox Mansion.
The site is a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming to learn more about the momentous event and to see the historic artifacts.
