The Sardinia Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Sardinia, a town located in Erie County, New York. The society was founded in 1968 by a group of local residents who were passionate about preserving the town's rich heritage.

The society operates out of a historic building in the heart of Sardinia, which serves as their headquarters and museum. The museum features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents that showcase the town's history from its early settlement to the present day. Visitors can explore exhibits on various topics such as farming, transportation, and local businesses.

In addition to maintaining the museum, the society also hosts events throughout the year to educate the public about Sardinia's history. February 19, 2023: Vidler's 5 & 10 store with street clock, Main Street, East Aurora, New York A winter afternoon scene outside the famous Vidler's 5 and 10 store in East Aurora, New York. Sprawling across four adjacent storefronts lining the north side of Main Street between Church and Pine Streets in the village center, Vidler's traces its history back to June 1930, when namesake founder Robert S. Vidler opened the so-called "Fair 5¢ to $1.00 Store", offering Depression-wary locals a modest range of bargain-priced merchandise in a 900-square-foot rented space. Vidler purchased the building outright in 1946, expanded into the neighboring storefronts gradually beginning in the 1960s, and in 1987 the store began its ascent to the status of kitschy tourist destination courtesy of a series of local television spots featuring "Bob and Ed", the second generation of the Vidler family to operate it. Today, aside from the dizzying range of gifts and knickknacks it sells to throngs of loyal visitors, Vidler's is known from coverage in <i>Business Week</i> and <i>Martha Stewart Living</i> magazines, and has been featured on the small screen in many of the made-for-TV Christmas movies that have famously filmed in East Aurora. The street clock seen at right, manufactured by the Verdin Company of Cincinnati, was unveiled in 2000 to celebrate Vidler's 70th anniversary in business.
January 20, 2023: WDCX radio transmitter building and tower, Boston, New York A view of the transmitter building and tower of radio station WDCX, located in the town of Boston, New York. Rising 348 feet above the top of a low hill just off Zimmerman Road, the tower beams its signal in a non-directional pattern over a roughly 8,000-square-mile area that covers virtually all of the Niagara Frontier as well as many adjacent regions: a circle extending from Hamilton, Ontario in the northwest to Bradford, Pennsylvania in the southeast to the outer suburbs of Rochester in the northeast. The oldest continually operating Christian radio station in the Buffalo market, and only the second of any format to broadcast in stereophonic sound, WDCX signed on the air in February 1963 and, from its <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/carrotflowerproductionsintl/52967610448">studios</a> on Delaware Avenue just north of downtown, today broadcasts a schedule of nationally syndicated religious programming both on its original frequency of 99.5 FM as well as via two AM simulcasts (WDCZ 970 in Buffalo; WDCX 990 in Rochester) and one Class D FM translator (W296EF 107.1 in Rochester).
January 11, 2023: Faith United Church of Christ, Boston, New York Though its own history <i>per se</i> dates back only to 1960, Faith United Church of Christ in Boston, New York is heir to the legacies of two faith communities that each counted long traditions in the town, dating back to 1834 and 1835 respectively. Faith United Church of Christ, Boston, New York, January 2023 Faith United Church of Christ, 8651 Boston State Road, Boston, New York, January 2023. A work of the Buffalo-based architectural firm of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec, this two-story brick church complex was described in news coverage of its dedication as being Colonial in style, but instead serves as a prime example of the firm's conservative and traditionalist-informed take on Modern architecture, with the latter's requisite sleek lines, simplified forms, and geometric angularity but a scheme of ornamentation that both is quite a bit less austere than the norm and also unashamedly hearkens back to earlier architectural traditions. This is most visible on the central spire, with its louvered base, as well as the Classical-style broken pediment that comprises the gable of the glass-faced entrance vestibule, a later addition to the building that is nonetheless harmonious in design. The United Church of Christ as a denomination was founded in 1957 as a merger of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical & Reformed Churches, and this is echoed in Faith's own history as an individual congregation: it traces its history to January 10, 1960, when St. Paul's Evangelical & Reformed Church of Boston and the small, struggling, Congregationalist-affiliated Community Church in nearby Patchin - two faith communities that counted long traditions in the Boston Valley dating back to 1834 and 1835 respectively, and which had already shared the same pastor for several years - signed a Basis of Union and began holding joint services. Under the direction of the Rev. Richard Whitney, they soon purchased a six-acre plot of land roughly midway between the sites of the two original parent churches and continued holding services in the former's building (now home of the Boston Historical Society) until the completion of their present one, for which ground was broken in August 1965. Aided by volunteer labor from the congregants themselves, construction proceeded briskly and the building, comprising a 300-capacity sanctuary, 200-capacity fellowship hall, seven Sunday school classrooms, and a full-size kitchen, was dedicated just nine months later.

In 1986, The Roycroft Inn, as part of the Roycroft Campus, received National Historic Landmark status. Over a nine year period, with support from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, The Inn was meticulously underwent an $8 million dollar restoration to return it to its original splendor. It was re-opened for guests in 1995. NRHP ~ District 4738

December 5, 2022: St. Matthias Episcopal Church, East Aurora, New York The distinguished Late Gothic Revival architecture of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in East Aurora, New York - a 1928 work of the local firm of Shelgren & Whitman - has recently earned it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. St. Matthias Episcopal Church, East Aurora, New York, December 2022 St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 374 Main Street at Maple Street, East Aurora, New York, December 2022. Built in 1928 to a design by the Buffalo-based architectural practice of North & Shelgren, the moderately simplified Late Gothic Revival styling of this stone church is quite typical of the firm's output at the time: the narrow, Gothic-arched window dominating the top half of the façade is echoed by the paired windows on the side elevations but contrasted by the round arch that crowns the main entrance, which in turn is flanked by stepped, gablet-topped buttresses. The spireless tower with its tall louvered window is tucked into the corner of this Tetris block-shaped building. Founded in 1869 as the Episcopal Church's first organized congregation in the village, St. Matthias rented space from the local Universalist church until the construction of their first proper home at some time in the early 1870s (a gap in parish records precludes ascertaining the exact date). From humble beginnings the parish steadily grew, but financial difficulties were a perennial struggle in roughly the first half-century of its history: the need to purchase land for (1894, on the present site) and build (1895) a second, larger church, as well as persistent needs for structural repairs on the rectory, kept the parish in debt on an almost continuous basis. Nonetheless, St. Matthias grew into an established presence in East Aurora and, with the onset of the early 20th-century Progressive movement, established a reputation as a champion of social justice: the church was on the forefront of the local scene vis-à-vis issues such as workers' rights, women's suffrage, and (more controversially) also the temperance movement. In 1917, only two years after finally retiring their debt, St. Matthias' parish vestry installed Rev. Henry de Wolf de Mauriac, formerly pastor of a congregation in New Hampshire, as their new rector and soon thereafter turned their attention to the possibility of erecting another, still larger new church. The Building Fund was officially established in 1923 when Robert B. Ward, a parishioner, donated his family home for use as a temporary rectory during the construction process, the proceeds from the later sale of which could be used to help settle building costs. After additional fundraising, the cornerstone was laid for the current building in September 1927, with dedication eight months later. Ultimately, in 2019, its distinguished architecture earned it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
September 27, 2022: Aurora Theatre, East Aurora, New York Among the last of a dying breed, the Aurora Theatre in East Aurora, New York is a small neighborhood single-screen movie house that was never closed or abandoned in the face of competition from suburban multiplexes, nor repurposed for other uses: it's been screening the same sort of first-run mainstream films since its opening day way back in 1925.
