The East Springwater Historical Society Inc. in Wayland, NY was founded in the early 1950s. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the East Springwater area. The society's mission is to discover, collect, and archive documents, photographs, and records relating to the history of the area. Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad Depot, 1941 Originally opening in the 1870s, the D&MM Depot was a wooden rectangular building that was later expanded in the 1920s. While the engines and tracks no longer remain in the village of North Dansville, the depot has undergone a number of restorative changes and stands today as Battle Street Brewery. Springwater Erie Station, 1909 While most railroad stations are built at strategic points in the heart of villages or along popular travel routes, the hilly countryside of Springwater provided some challenges. The village itself is nestled at the base of the Hemlock Lake inlet. To avoid heavy trains struggling with the steep slopes, this station was built three miles west of the village around 1854. September 1, 2022: Vintage-style neon sign for The Coffee Cup Restaurant, Main Street, Dansville, New York Seemingly straight out of the mid-20th century is the neon sign outside the Coffee Cup Restaurant on Main Street in Dansville, New York. This section of the village's business district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 as the Dansville Downtown Historic District.
Lehigh Valley Depot in Hemlock NY This image developed from a glass negative at the Livingston County Historian's Office shows the rural train depot that once stood just north of the Hemlock Fair Grounds. While freight trains would load up fertilizer, and building materials from Woodruff, Reed, & Co.'s two warehouses nestled against the Hemlock Outlet, eager guests could take a few short steps from the train platform to J.H. Morton's Hotel. In 1902 the Morton Hotel was advertised as "First-class accommodations headquarters for hunters and fishermen. All kinds of liquors and cigars sold." While the Hemlock Fair would attract crowds of visitors every fall, the abundance of nature in Hemlock would bring outdoorsmen to town all year long. Dansville Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad Depot Here some fashionable passengers wait on the platform for their train in North Dansville, NY. You can see from the departing freight train on the right that this station was a transportation hub for both people and goods. January 26, 2022: Civil War Memorial, Elton Park, Bloomfield, New York Designed by sculptor James Goodwin Batterson, the Civil War Monument at the center of Elton Park in the village of Bloomfield, New York is one of the earliest-ever artistic depictions of an American Civil War combatant. Conesus Erie / "Round Pie" Station Similar to modern gas stations, this small train station in Conesus NY had everything that a weary traveler could need. Every day people would purchase, reading materials, snacks, or a "round pie' from the station's restaurant. The "Round Pie" Station was feeding travelers as early as the Civil War and their pies came in many flavors including huckleberry, apple, grape, custard, peach, and mincemeat. One 1928 newspaper article reminisces how these tasty pies were "just the kind mother would make." They were so good that allegedly Frederick Douglass would purchase a blackberry pie any time he passed through Conesus on his way to visit family in Ontario County from Rochester. Jackson Hotel and Health Resort Chef Also known as the "Castle on the Hill," "Our Home on the Hillside," and the "Jackson Sanitorium, The Jackson Hotel and Health Resort promoted healthy living through holistic practices from 1858 to 1986. This chef would have been in charge of preparing meals for both the patients and staff. The foods eaten at the Jackson Health Resort were usually light such as soups or granula. Not to be confused with granola; granula was the first cold breakfast cereal and was invented by the hotel's founder Dr. James Caleb Jackson and manufactured in Dansville NY.
