South Lima Erie Railroad When the Erie railroad first came to South Lima in 1852, many locals made their living by farming. The rich soil in the area was so ideal for celery, onions, and mushrooms, that one 1899 article described it as a "boom town." To accommodate the massive amount of produce that was being shipped out on the Erie railroad, the Bahrenburgh Brothers Co. had a wooden storage building built by the Fay & Dryer architecture firm in 1902. Two years later, a spark from a passing train started a fire that destroyed many homes and businesses including the storage building. It's replacement was built the same year and still stands today along Muck Rd. The South Bristol Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Naples, New York. Its primary goal is to preserve and share the history of the South Bristol area. The society was founded in 1992 and is run by a board of directors and volunteers.

September 1, 2022: Vintage-style neon sign for The Coffee Cup Restaurant, Main Street, Dansville, New York Seemingly straight out of the mid-20th century is the neon sign outside the Coffee Cup Restaurant on Main Street in Dansville, New York. This section of the village's business district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 as the Dansville Downtown Historic District.

March 11, 2022: A Straight Shot Down Route 14A, Town of Seneca, New York The arcadian countryside of upstate New York's Finger Lakes region is on full display in this view headed south along State Route 14A in the Town of Seneca, New York on a pleasantly mild late-winter afternoon.
Village Hall, Honeoye Falls, New York, March 2022 Honeoye Falls Village Hall, 5 East Street, Honeoye Falls, New York, March 2022. An 1886 work of the Rochester-based firm of Fay & Dryer, this handsome brick edifice stands on the shore of Honeoye Creek and is a contributing property to the NRHP-listed Honeoye Falls Village Historic District. The stout massing, the rough texture of the exterior, the profusion of round- and segmentally-arched windows, and the Classical detailing (note the projecting crown on the second-story window above the entrance, with its ends styled into volutes) are all indicators of the Romanesque Revival style of architecture that was popular at the time. The robust corner tower, with the "Iron Fireman" sculpture adorning the top of its pyramidal roof, was an 1888 addition intended for the fire department with which the village government shared the building until 1975; its original purpose was as a place to hang firehoses out to dry. In addition, the second floor contained a large auditorium whose stage played host to a wide variety of fundraising dances, theatrical and vaudeville performances, and even movie screenings.
January 26, 2022: Civil War Memorial, Elton Park, Bloomfield, New York Designed by sculptor James Goodwin Batterson, the Civil War Monument at the center of Elton Park in the village of Bloomfield, New York is one of the earliest-ever artistic depictions of an American Civil War combatant. Civil War Memorial, Elton Park, Bloomfield, New York, January 2022 Designed by sculptor James Goodwin Batterson, the Civil War Monument at the center of Elton Park in the village of Bloomfield, New York is a copy of the Deerfield Soldiers' Monument in Massachusetts: that is, a 45-foot granite obelisk topped by a figure of a Union soldier gazing vigilantly to the south so as to repel any invader, and engraved with a dedication "to the memory of her sons who died in defence <i>(sic)</i> of the Union" as well as those men's names, dates and places of death, 39 in all. Dedicated in 1867, it's one of the earliest-ever artistic depictions of an American Civil War combatant. The four cannons surrounding the monument, two of which are seen here, were originally genuine Civil War artillery pieces, but were replaced later with replicas. As seen in January 2022.
August 20, 2021: Rose Garden and Belvedere, Sonnenberg Gardens, Canandaigua, New York A view of the Rose Garden at Sonnenberg Gardens State Historic Park in Canandaigua, New York. Though rose gardens are certainly not an uncommon component of such landscaped estates, Sonnenberg's rose garden's design of intersecting circles is indeed unusual; the curved beds and climbing bushes give a sense of informality that's much at odds with the norm. Most of the 2,500 bushes in the garden today - representing only pink, red and white cultivars, following the preferences of the lady of the house, Mary Clark Thompson - date to its 1971 restoration, the first of two, and were sourced from the renowned Jackson & Perkins Rose Gardens in Newark, New York. A second restoration occurred two years later, precipitated by the finding of the original blueprints used to construct it in 1905-06. At rear is the Belvedere, a majestic, Classically-styled columned pergola that separates the Rose Garden from the Italian Garden on the other side and affords visitors sweeping vistas of both.
Conesus Erie / "Round Pie" Station Similar to modern gas stations, this small train station in Conesus NY had everything that a weary traveler could need. Every day people would purchase, reading materials, snacks, or a "round pie' from the station's restaurant. The "Round Pie" Station was feeding travelers as early as the Civil War and their pies came in many flavors including huckleberry, apple, grape, custard, peach, and mincemeat. One 1928 newspaper article reminisces how these tasty pies were "just the kind mother would make." They were so good that allegedly Frederick Douglass would purchase a blackberry pie any time he passed through Conesus on his way to visit family in Ontario County from Rochester.
