Fountain at Barker Commons, Fredonia, New York, April 2023 Seen in April 2023 is a charming park fountain, one of two that bedeck the landscaped greenery comprising Barker Common, the centerpiece of the historic village of Fredonia, New York. Measuring about two and a half acres in area, the park dates to the village's earliest history: it was in roughly the early 1810s when Hezekiah Barker, one of the earliest white settlers in the area, laid out the streets in what's now the village center, leaving aside for common use the plot bounded by Day, Church, Center, and Main Streets. (Temple Street was extended through the green a little later, creating the bisected arrangement that persists today.) The fountains themselves date to 1901 and figure among the wealth of cast iron architectural elements and design features within the NRHP-listed Fredonia Commons Historic District.

Originally operated by the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, this coal-fired plant was built in 1950 and expanded ten years later, electrifying Dunkirk and the surrounding area to the tune of 600 megawatts until its shutdown in 2015 in the wake of changed economic conditions and its parent company's failure to find financing for a conversion of the plant to natural gas. The site has remained idle in the years since, the object of numerous redevelopment proposals that have come and gone without success.
