The tremolo An early morning capture of a parent loon on a perfectly still and quiet pond. Except the loon was doing its tremolo call probably because he wasn't happy by my presence. Their chick had hatched just recently and these parents were very skittish. I was far away, on my motionless kayak tucked up against the shore, and the mom and chick were clearly safe (on the other side of the island, behind this parent, and not even visible). Nevertheless, I was being "yelled at". (Same loon family as my recent loon posts.) Although you can tell the loon is making a sound, I wish the tremolo call could be part of the viewing experience. Among birds in North America, the loon must have one of the most interesting repertoire of vocalizations. The red halo of a reflection around the loon comes from the roof of a small cabin on the other side of the pond. A fortunate "planetary alignment" experience. I like how it matches the red eye of the loon. Hit "z" twice for a closeup view.
A discovery Maybe this shouldn't be admitted, but despite hiking in the woods all of my life I was not aware of the variety of small and beautiful birds that are present on the East Coast until just recently, such as the blackburnian warber, the cape may warbler, the Tennessee warbler, the common yellowthroat, the bay-breasted warbler, the magnolia warbler, the white-eyed and blue-eyed vireo, etc. Over the course of one weekend on a kayak on a tiny Adirondack Pond I saw all of those species, and the one depicted, the black and white warbler. (No mystery how it got its name.) I tried to capture as many images of them as possible, but they are so challenging - they are small, move quickly and rarely give you a clean shot in a nice setting. Of all of the warblers, I saw this one the least, only for a minute or so. Yet it is my preferred image from the lot. Looking forward to many years of trying to find, identify and capture these tiny birds. I now have a substantial appreciation for those who are able to create beautiful images of them.
"Baby on board" This is the classic "baby on board" loon image. Not quite as sharp or as close as I would have wanted, but getting anywhere near them created obvious agitation. But, otherwise the conditions were as good as I could ask for. According to range maps on ebird, the Adirondacks are at the most southern end of the common loon's breeding range. I hope that range doesn't shift north - watching the loons raise a chick each year is a highlight of the summer. This image is the day after the parent's momentarily abandoned the chick, so clearly all is well. The chick here is probably a few days old, at most a week.
Loon chick abandoned I have the classic "loon chick on parent's back" image, but this one is more unusual. This chick is young, probably less than a week old, maybe a few days old. There is a story why it is alone. The parents were very skittish when I was anywhere near them on the pond. The one parent without the chick began to repeatedly bellyflop towards me (a behavior that I had not seen before), then decided to take off and leave the pond, maybe in frustration that the "I mean business" display didn't get rid of me. As surprising as that was, a few minutes later the other parent, the one with the loon chick on the back, rose up, and did a full stretch of its wings, causing the loon chick to drop into the pond. Next, the parent dove under the water and disappeared leaving the chick all alone with me on the surface. I was shocked. The parents that were hyper protective of their chick had seemingly just abandoned it. My first reaction was worry, maybe guilt - did I cause the parents to give up on their chick? Do I need to rescue the chick? But now I can approach the chick to get a (relatively) closeup image without the parents throwing a loon fit. But if I get too close and the parents return I could end up in a bad situation. I approached a little bit, snapped a few shots, and then backed up to see what would happen. The loon that chucked the chick off the back returned from the deep after a long period of time (even long in loon diving time) and was clearly agitated. It swam over to the chick and the chick proceeded to get back on its back. Fortunately, no loon chick rescue needed. 2 ducklings As promised, more of the ring-necked ducklings. The 2-duckling version is my favorite, despite having the fewest ducklings in the capture, because they are not both going in the same direction. They finally became somewhat comfortable with my presence that they were not looking for an immediate escape route.
