From Tower 19 at Dura/Europos (see on <a href="https://pleiades.stoa.org/places/893990" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Pleiades</a>), Syria, 1928-1937 excavations

The only surviving (though heavily restored) Roman rectangular shield (scutum), discovered in a tower at Dura that had probably been undermined by Sassanid besiegers in 256 CE. It would once have borne a bronze boss (umbo) covering the central handgrip.
