Pinnacle Quilters of San Benito County is an organization based in San Juan Bautista, California. The organization was founded in 1988 by a group of local quilters who wanted to promote the art of quilting in their community. The club is open to all quilters, from beginners to experts, from any age and from any location.

The club meets once a month to discuss upcoming projects and to exchange quilting tips and ideas. Every quarter, members host a quilt show where members can display their work and receive feedback from other quilters. The club also holds workshops and classes for members to learn new techniques or perfect their existing skills.

In addition to quilting, Pinnacle Quilters of San Benito County also promotes needle arts, such as embroidery, cross-stitch, and lace making. They organize special events throughout the year, such as block-of-the-month programs, charity drives, fabric swaps, and yard sales.

The group also works to support the local community by donating quilts to local charities and hosting quilting classes for seniors and children. Pinnacle Quilters of San Benito County is a great way to meet new people and develop skills in a creative and supportive environment.

Salinas / Oldenburg sculpture (# 0070) A mediocre shot because it wasn’t the reason I was visiting the park, but in the background (and partially hidden) is “Hat in Three Stages of Landing” by Claes Oldenburg. Pulling together various sources that I ran across, the Oldenburg hats ended up in Salinas at this location mainly because of a national effort to fund art for smaller cities in the 1970s, and Oldenburg had an interest in creating art for the people.

The park is next to the Salinas Rodeo ground and the hat motif was chosen to represent the stages of a hat coming to landing when thrown from a horse by a rodeo cowboy. The Oldenburg work was installed in 1978, deteriorated somewhat around 2000 and then was refurbished in 2013. To honor that Salinas is called “Salad Bowl of the World” for all of lettuce grown there, the hats are perforated. The Roadside America link below has more detail.

I was actually more interested in the statue in the front, for which I could find no description.

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment - returning (# 0024) Life after the war, returning to no home and with no resources, to hostile environments that were slow to accommodate their former neighbors. Per information on a related <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">site</a></u>, due to hostility there was no reestablishment of the Japanese community of Castroville, though some went to work in the canneries in nearby Monterey. Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment cycle (# 0028) A fascinating, and very under-utilized, historical site in Castroville, which is on the way to Monterey, CA. I fortunately discovered it, and a number of other places related to Japanese and Chinese history in California, just by searching through <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">The Historical Marker Database</a></u>.

Japanese laborers had been migrating to this area since the late 1800’s as tenant farmers (the primary crop remains artichokes). By the 1930’s there were enough Japanese families that they wanted a schoolhouse to preserve history and also to provide a community for their children that was safe from the local hostility. The “Japanese Schoolhouse,” founded in 1936, was short-lived since in 1942 all Japanese were ordered to be interred, due to the war with Japan.

Historical Marker <u>”<a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">For the Sake of the Children</a>”</u> provides a good description of the history of the area. Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse – monument (# 0030) As the <u><a href="http://www.mchsmuseum.com/Japanese.html" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Monterey County</a></u> site and the <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63714" rel="noreferrer nofollow">HMDB timeline</a></u> describe the schoolhouse and the Castroville community, the town has historically been home to migrants who work in the surrounding fields, and those migrants have regularly had a concern that their children remember their heritage and use their heritage for protection, thus the “ For the Sake of the Children” motto.

Unfortunately, the site is not well-marked on either of the major highways passing it, and there are no signs in the town leading to it. Thus, much like I’ve experienced in other recent efforts to understand historic discrimination and hostility to Asian populations, there seems to be a concerted effort to keep that past invisible.
