ELDRIDGE STREET PROJECT
NEW YORK, NY
Located in the heart of New York City’s Lower East Side, the Eldridge Street Project is a community-based organization that works to preserve and celebrate the area’s vibrant heritage. Founded in 1986, the project is dedicated to the restoration and revitalization of the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first house of worship built by Eastern European Jews in America. The project also works to provide educational and cultural programs that promote understanding of the area’s history and culture.
The Eldridge Street Synagogue was built in 1887, with a distinct Moorish Revival style. The synagogue stood as a beacon of hope and a symbol of the Jewish immigrants’ journey to America. Over time, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. In 1986, the Eldridge Street Project was formed to save the synagogue and restore it to its former glory.
The project’s restoration efforts included restoring the synagogue’s stained-glass windows, restoring the building’s façade, and refurbishing the sanctuary and its galleries. The project was completed in 2007, and the synagogue was reopened to the public as a museum and cultural center. Today, the synagogue is a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of Jewish heritage and identity.
The Eldridge Street Project continues to be a leader in preserving and celebrating the Lower East Side’s rich history and culture. In addition to restoring the synagogue, the project offers educational programs for children, workshops for adults, and hosts various cultural events. The project also manages a museum, the Museum at Eldridge Street, which showcases the area’s history through interactive exhibits and interactive programs.
