The only surviving (though heavily restored) Roman rectangular shield (scutum), discovered in a tower at Dura that had probably been undermined by Sassanid besiegers in 256 CE. It would once have borne a bronze boss (umbo) covering the central handgrip.

Sandy Ground Historical is a small, yet significant historic site located in Valley Stream, New York. The site is also known as the Sandy Ground Historical Society and Museum, and it is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the free black community that existed in the area during the 19th century.

The community, which was established in the early 1800s, was comprised of African Americans who had been freed from slavery and were looking for a new place to settle. The community was self-sufficient, with residents working as farmers, fishermen, and tradespeople. Over time, the community grew and became an important center for African American culture and commerce.

Today, the Sandy Ground Historical site is home to several historic buildings, including a church, a schoolhouse, and several homes that were built by members of the community. Visitors can take guided tours of the site and learn about the history of the community and its significance in the broader context of African American history.

The museum also offers educational programs for children and adults, as well as special events throughout the year. Overall, Sandy Ground Historical is an important and unique historic site that offers a glimpse into a little-known chapter of American history.
