The Salamanca Historical Society was founded in 1978 by a group of citizens from Salamanca, New York. Its mission is to promote the preservation and appreciation of the history and culture of the region. The Society works to preserve and protect the city’s historic architectural, cultural, and natural resources.
The Society operates a research library and museum located at the old train station building. The library houses a unique collection of photographs, books, maps, and documents relating to the history of Salamanca and the surrounding area. The museum showcases artifacts from the past, including pieces from the Seneca Nation and the Erie Railroad. Visitors can also explore the restored train station, which includes a full-size replica of an old steam engine.
The Society also hosts a variety of educational and cultural events throughout the year. These include lectures and presentations, special events such as the annual railroad festival, and school field trips. The society also organizes tours of local historical sites, such as the Seneca Nation Council House and the old Erie Railroad line.
