Restored vernal pool wetlands in Tioga County, New York A restored vernal pool wetland supports amphibians and other wildlife at Michigan Hill State Forest in Tioga County, N.Y., on June 12, 2021. Such vernal pools improve water quality and provide habitat for 32 amphibian species in New York, a state that has lost roughly half of its historical wetlands to development and agriculture. The Upper Susquehanna Coalition (USC), in partnership the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, developed designs for the wetlands that would maximize site diversity and habitat value. According to a USC press release, "The building process involved digging holes of varying sizes in gently sloped areas with poorly drained soil. The holes then filled with rainwater and groundwater, and natural materials such as topsoil, leaf litter, rocks, and sticks were added to encourage native plant growth and provide cover to attract wildlife."
