NEW WINDSOR CANTONMENT

New Windsor Cantonment was a military encampment located in Vails Gate, New York. It was established in the winter of 1782-1783 during the American Revolutionary War, and served as the final encampment for the Continental Army before the war came to a close. The Cantonment was built to house the 7,000 soldiers who were stationed there, as well as their families and support staff.

The Cantonment was a sprawling complex that consisted of over 600 log huts and numerous other structures, including a hospital, a chapel, and a bakery. The huts were constructed in a grid pattern and were designed to house 12 soldiers each. The soldiers were responsible for constructing their own huts, which they did using materials that were harvested from the surrounding forest.

Life at the Cantonment was difficult, with soldiers struggling to survive in the harsh winter conditions. Food and supplies were often in short supply, and the soldiers had to resort to hunting and foraging to sustain themselves. Despite these challenges, the soldiers remained disciplined and focused, and their perseverance helped bring the war to a successful conclusion.

Today, the New Windsor Cantonment is a popular historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into life during the American Revolution. The site features a museum, reconstructed huts, and other historical exhibits that bring the story of the Cantonment to life.
