MUSEUM OF 60'S MUSIC AND CULTURE

LOCKPORT, NY

Beach-Oehman House, Cheektowaga, New York, July 2019 Seen here is the house at 274 Huth Road, built circa 1865 and today one of, if not the oldest extant building in the Cleveland Hill area of Cheektowaga, New York. Though it's been subjected to a number of later additions and alterations (notably the enclosed front porch seen at left behind the tree), it's still easy to discern the original vernacular gable-and-wing design in which the house was configured upon its completion: a very common style in America's rural precincts at the time. The house was built for William Beach (1801-1873), a native of the upper Hudson Valley who along with his family were among the town's earliest pioneer settlers, arriving no later than the 1820s in what was then a sparsely populated wilderness. By 1850, Beach was the owner of the prosperous 88-acre farmstead on which he live out the remainder of his life. Afterword, the property passed into the hands of Michael Oehman (1813-1887), a German-born farmer in whose family the property would remain until 1948, when it was finally subdivided and sold off to residential homebuyers as part of the so-called Orchard Hill subdivision. The family's legacy lives on today as the namesake of Oehman Boulevard, one of the streets of that subdivision on which about twenty homes built by John and Peter Oehman themselves still stand.
