20190910-OPPE-LSC-2129 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) has been working with the Zuni Pueblo Housing Authority (ZHA) Zuni Self-Help Housing project in Zuni, NM, on September 9, 2019. Found earlier in the day by Rustay, Egelhoff, and Hetrick. News of bird was not widely distributed out of respect for the Pueblo of Zuni and due to sensitive habitat issues. The bird ended up being a one-day wonder, and was not found again after the 18th.

The Hogback This striking hogback marks the transition from level Colorado Plateau to the Zuni Mountains. (As a measure of how striking it is, if you look up “hogback” in Wikipedia, you’ll see a practically identical aerial photo of the same spot.) It’s ~300 ft (100 m) high. Geologists call it the Nutria Monocline; locals just call it The Hogback.

A hogback forms at the edge of a block of sedimentary strata that is uplifted at a steep angle; one face of the ridge is the canted top of the uppermost stratum, &amp; the other is a cross-section eroded perpendicularly through the exposed layer cake. In this case, the strata of the Colorado Plateau were tilted by the uplift of the Zuni Mountains, which lie to the east (left). The surface of the plateau to the right is Upper Cretaceous (85 million years ago). The hogback exposes deeper Cretaceous layers; the ridgeline is Dakota Sandstone (100 Mya). To the left, in the Zuni Mountain area, much older strata (Permian, 250 Mya) have been lifted to the surface.
