The shop contained tools like lathes and drill presses that were used to make parts for new inventions. The machinists used these tools to cut and shape metal parts to construct models of Edison's inventions.

NJ - West Orange: Edison Labaratory - Chemical Storage and Pattern Shop The Edison Laboratory Chemical Storage and Pattern Shop, Building 3, was built in 1887-1888. As originally conceived, the front of the building was used to store chemicals and the back end was where the pattern shop was located. This was a woodworking shop where Edison’s carpenters produced wooden models for parts of specialized machines used in the production of Edison products. The models were used to cast the actual metal parts. Today the shop is still operable and has been used by preservation specialists in reconstructing woodwork for Edison's house, Glenmont, also located in West Oranger New Jersey.

Pedder was forced to surrender the estate after it was discovered that he funded its construction with embezzle funds from the Arnold Constable Company. Edison purchased the distressed asset in 1886 for $125,000 and moved in with his second wife, Mina, and his three children from his first marriage. Mina raised three children of her own with Thomas in the house, including future New Jersey governor Charles Edison. The house originally comprised of 23 rooms with cutting edge features for its time including with gravity-convection central heat, indoor flush toilets, and hot and cold piped water. Edison added six more rooms and electrical wiring. The house, which is open to the public, retains all its original furnishings in an Eastlake style interior.
