The Market Square Steeple Fund in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a non-profit organization that works to preserve and restore the steeple of the North Church. The North Church is a historic Congregational church built in 1885, and is one of the most iconic landmarks in Portsmouth. The Market Square Steeple Fund was created in 2011 with the aim of restoring the steeple of the North Church to its original glory.
The Market Square Steeple Fund works to raise funds to restore and preserve the steeple, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of preserving historic landmarks. To date, the fund has raised more than $750,000 for the steeple’s restoration. The restoration project involves cleaning and repairing the steeple’s four faces, replacing all of its copper cladding, and repainting the steeple in its original colors.
The Market Square Steeple Fund also works to promote community involvement in the preservation of the steeple. The fund hosts events such as benefit concerts and lectures, and encourages local businesses to become involved in the preservation effort. The fund also works with local schools to educate students about the importance of preserving historic sites.
