The Sunapee Historical Society was established in 1976 to preserve, promote and celebrate the rich history of the Sunapee region. Located in the town of Sunapee, New Hampshire, the mission of the Society is to serve as a clearinghouse for Sunapee area historical information, to promote and encourage public understanding and appreciation of the town’s history and to collect, preserve and make accessible materials related to the area’s history.
The Society’s headquarters is located in the historic Sunapee Town Hall building, which was built in 1876 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building serves as a repository for historical documents, photographs and artifacts related to the region’s past. The Society also maintains an extensive library of books, periodicals and other materials related to the history of the Sunapee area.
The Society offers a variety of educational programs and activities, such as lectures, walking tours, seminars, slide shows and exhibits. Special events are also held throughout the year, including a summer concert series and a holiday open house. In addition, the Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Sunapee Sun, which features articles about local people, places and events.
