Individuals of this population produce wings of the fruiting calyx that are either reddish or whitish. Branching occurs most along the upper stem regions (i.e., no cruciform basal branching in this population).

Yellow rabbitbrush usually occurs more out in the open (e.g., it is abundant in recently burned Wyoming big sagebrush steppe) but here it is sporadic in the lower elevation understory of the Carson Range.

The long cylindrical flowering heads with each involucral bract having a recurved tip is most distinctive. This site lies along North Timberline Drive between Whites and Thomas Creeks, southwest Reno, Washoe County, Nevada.
