Filoli is a historic country estate located in Woodside, California. It was built in 1917 by the Bourn family, who were prominent San Francisco entrepreneurs, and was later purchased by the Roth family in 1937. The name "Filoli" is derived from the first two letters of each word in the phrase "Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life."
The estate spans 654 acres and includes a Georgian-style mansion, extensive gardens, and a nature preserve. The mansion features 43 rooms, including a grand ballroom and a library with over 10,000 volumes. The gardens are renowned for their beauty and variety, with formal gardens, a sunken garden, a rose garden, and a woodland garden.
Filoli is open to the public for tours and events, and is also used for educational programs and research. The estate has been designated a National Trust Historic Site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a popular destination for visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area, and is considered one of the finest examples of an early 20th century country estate in the United States.
