In 2021, thanks to partnerships with the National Forest Foundation, Arbor Day Foundation, and American Forests, Lolo National Forest received $154,000 in funding to purchase 322,000 seedlings which planted 1,432 acres in the Sheep Gap, Sunrise, Rice Ridge, and Morrell Complex fires.
Crews carefully work to replace one of the Double Arrow Lookout tower support legs with a new leg. The wood type and hardware used to replace the tower leg is in alignment with historical quality and character of the original structure. The Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) of 2020 established the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF) to address priority deferred maintenance projects on federal lands. Great American Outdoors Act funded 12 projects on the Lolo National Forest for 2021. A featured 2021 GAOA-funded project was the restoration of the Double Arrow Lookout structure, located on the Seeley Lake Ranger District. This is a two-year project and most of the work occurred this past summer with help and expertise from the Northern Region Historic Preservation Team, volunteers, and District staff. Crews worked throughout the summer to replace structural components of the Lookout such as the tower support legs, bracing, and the staircase. Built in 1931, the Double Arrow Lookout is an example of the early L-4 Lookout style and was placed on the rental system for public use in 2006. In 2019, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2021 1,107 acres of prescribed burning and 653 acres of thinning was accomplished across multiple Districts through critical partnership funding by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program. These treatments help to improve habitat by clearing out dead and overgrown vegetation to make way for new forage and encourage nutrient recycling in the soil. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) funded these projects for $56,500 and the Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program contributed $7,000.

Retired Smokejumpers: A group of 10 retired smokejumpers spent a week in early June camped at Monture Guard Station while they volunteered working on the exterior restoration of the station. The group applied linseed oil to the Guard Station, Barn, and two small outbuildings, repainted the Information Kiosk, flagpole, and repaired the steps on the front and back porches. The project also received a visit from Montana PBS "Backroads Montana" - who featured the volunteer efforts at the Guard Station in a recent episode. Backcountry Horseman Montana Chapter held a Rendezvous at the Monture Guard Station in late August. Over 40 of their members attended during a three-day period with many camping out on site at the compound. The group hosted riding technique clinics and assisted with trail clearing. A smaller group returned in September to assist our Trails Foreman with repairing the roof of Burnt Cabin - about 10 miles into the backcountry.

The work is being led by the Northern Region Historic Preservation Team with help from District staff and an agreement with non-profit Framing Our Communities. This group worked in 2021 on Phase 1 of the Double Arrow Restoration project. Phase 2 (final phase) is scheduled for early summer 2022. The goal is to have the lookout open for rental again sometime during the summer of 2022.
