SolarEclipse_20240408_1 The Great American Eclipse of 2024

Nothing can fully prepare you for experiencing this in person. It is undoubtedly the most spectacular astronomical event we can ever experience on Earth. This was shot during the first few seconds of totality. With the sun's blinding photosphere hidden from view, the glowing solar corona surrounds the dark silhouette of the moon. The bright pink sliver in the upper left is part of the sun's chromosphere, with deep red solar prominences nearby. The largest of them were obvious to the naked eye.

I made the fatal mistake of recording raw video in 8 bit format instead of 16 bit (8 bit is the default in FireCapture). It's similar to shooting JPG instead of raw. The result is horrendous color banding that shows up when stretching the histogram. I had to add artificial noise and apply minimal stretching/processing to get this acceptable result. It's disappointing because I can't push these images to get the detail I wanted, but at least I got something. And it was worth the ~1800 miles of driving even for the naked eye experience alone. I'll get my settings right for the 2027 eclipse!
