MAGNOLIA HALL
NATCHEZ, MS
Magnolia Hall is a historic mansion located in Natchez, Mississippi. Built in 1856, the five-story Greek Revival-style mansion sits atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The house was originally built by Dr. Julius Freidenburg, a German-born physician who had moved to Natchez in 1851. The three-story main house and two-story wings are constructed of brick and feature a grand portico with fluted columns and a balcony.
Inside, the house is filled with a mix of original and reproduction furniture and artwork. Many of the original pieces date to the 1850s. The interior features a grand central staircase, four fireplaces, and twelve-foot ceilings. The walls are adorned with intricate plasterwork, marble mantelpieces, and ornamental cornices.
The house remained in the Freidenburg family until the early 1900s, when it was purchased by the Hovey family. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974, and is now open to the public as a museum.
Visitors to Magnolia Hall can explore the mansion, grounds, and gardens, which include a number of outbuildings, a fountain, and a carriage house. The house also offers educational programs and special events throughout the year. Magnolia Hall is a beautiful example of antebellum architecture and an important part of Natchez's history.
