Swan family at Fish Lake I was lucky to be able to watch this Trumpeter swan family (a second adult is just out of the frame) as they relaxed amongst the lily pads of Fish Lake in Anoka County, Minnesota. The Fish Lake Nature Trail is part of the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve operated by the University of Minnesota and offers great birding.

"Wild" Chickens I was surprised to see this flock of chickens by the side of a gravel road running through the Boot Lake Scientific & Natural Area. These birds were probably a half mile or more from the nearest house - with a lot of swamp and woods for them to cross.They were bunched together like they were ready to gang up on any creature foolish enough to mess with them. I'm not sure what the real story is, but I like to think that they were tough enough to handle their wild existence.
