The crow lands, investigates, then proceeds to grip the bottom of the bag with his beak and tip it upside down. What looks like two bright yellow wrapped shapes slide onto the street where he grips one edge to unwrap it, push off the top (shown here), take the filling (cheese square on a sausage patty?) and fly a short distance away to find out if the filling is to his taste. Clinton County Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in St. Johns, MI. Established in 1972, the society is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of Clinton County. The society operates out of a historic building that was once the home of the county sheriff and his family.

The society hosts numerous exhibits throughout the year, featuring artifacts and memorabilia from the county’s history. The exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including early settlers, Native American culture, agriculture, and military history. The society also maintains a large research library that is open to the public.

Lettering, names, and weathering all point to the 1970s How different the economy, cost of living, and daily preoccupations and aspirations then versus now. Seeing this time traveler from a business long gone hearkens back to world and local events from about 50 years ago. The street name is Railroad Street, but the last passenger service ended in the early 1970s and the final freight train was later in the 1980s. By the early 2000s the rail-trail conversion was well underway on the CIS (Clinton, Ionia, Shiawassee) east-west route for joggers, walkers, and bicyclists (skiers in winter).
