Sweeping view above the Veterans Cemetery In the contrasty light of early morning this recording turns from the I-96 traffic around to the east where the morning sun sends out light and then to the rolling graveyard's south view and finally coming to rest with the view to the west. Continuous traffic flow at the round-about This is one of the first large traffic circles installed at a relatively busy junction in the city limits. A few neighborhoods have 1/4 or 1/8 this size, but this one encounters many cars and trucks each day. So inexperienced drivers have the opportunity to learn the habit of looking "upstream" in the flow of vehicles to give right-of-way before entering the flow. Old hands can slip into the flow and exit with little mental effort, by comparison, so natural and convenient does the new driving habit come to be. Row on row of Civil War military vets of Michigan and beyond Opened in 1886 and rededicated in a ceremony in 1986, the burial ground adjacent to the GRHV (Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, now Michigan Veterans Home) is mainly filled with mortal remains of those dying after the hostilities ended in 1865. Twenty years later, as veterans began aging and succumbed to infirmities, the land near the Grand River floodplain about 3.5 miles north of city center was donated and the State of Michigan built facilities for those having no means of support. The place largely was self sufficient, growing vegetables and slaughtering livestock to meet their needs in the first generation or two. Mostly land forces, a few serving U.S. Navy, too There are something like 4000 burials from Civil War era and following, according to the website for veteran burial grounds and the State of Michigan. Early leaves begin filling the bare branches of April Maybe 75 or 80 feet AGL (above ground level) this view along Monroe Avenue shows the vista that the Grand River (right edge of photo) follows as it flows toward the downtown skyline visible on the horizon. From there it another 35+ miles west and a little north to the shoreline of Lake Michigan where the river water meets the big water. Greener cemetery care - prairie for now at Fair Plains To the north and east of downtown Grand Rapids is one of the municipal burial grounds. Beginning around 2020 or 2021 to cut down on the cost of mowing the open ground and to reduce the grounds crew #carbonfootprint native plant consultants guided the planting of Michigan prairie species to be mown just once a year, as shown after the recent cut. North vista over Huff Park soon after sun up This view gives the baseball fields at top right, screened from the wetland by towering trees still bare from their winter rest.
