St. Joseph Catholic Church Last week Tuesday we headed up the Old Mission peninsula to visit the lighthouse. We mostly headed north on the east edge of the peninsula and returned on the western side. We drove by the old mission site and took a few pix at the lighthouse park. Along the way we found this gorgeous church. That set us on a mission to photograph some churches and crosses for my sister, who uses photos of crosses to focus her annual series of Lenten meditations on Facebook, which she calls "Journey to the Cross."

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum is located in Northport, Michigan, on the tip of the scenic Leelanau Peninsula. The lighthouse was first built in 1852 to guide ships through the dangerous Manitou Passage, which was a treacherous route for sailors. The lighthouse was in operation for over 100 years before it was decommissioned in 1972.

Today, visitors can explore the lighthouse and learn about its history through the museum exhibits. The museum includes displays of antique navigational equipment, photographs of the lighthouse and surrounding area, and artifacts from the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families.

The light tower is 47 feet tall and provides sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding forests. Visitors can climb the tower to the observation deck and take in the stunning views from the top.

The museum also offers guided tours of the lighthouse and grounds, providing visitors with a unique insight into the daily lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families. Harbor Antiques Last Wednesday we wandered around Elk Rapids for a bit. Along the way we had a chat with a lady who may well have been president of the local Chamber of Commerce; she <i>really</i> wanted us to try one of the local restaurants.
