S.S. LANE VICTORY

The S.S. Lane Victory is an American Victory-class cargo ship located in the port of San Pedro, California. It is a part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet and is currently open to the public as a maritime museum and memorial to those who served in the merchant marine during World War II.

The S.S. Lane Victory was built in 1945 by the California Shipbuilding Corporation in Los Angeles and was the last of 534 Victory ships to be constructed during World War II. It was named after Major General James H. Lane who was a U.S. Army officer and the first American killed in action in the Spanish-American War.

The Lane Victory was initially used for transporting war supplies and troops, including American GIs to Europe and the Pacific. After the war, the vessel was used for various commercial activities, including carrying cargo and passengers.

In 1989, the Lane Victory was acquired by the San Pedro Bay Historical Society and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. It is now open for tours, educational programs, and special events. Tours include the bridge, engine room, galley, radio room, and crew quarters.

The Lane Victory is currently berthed in the outer harbor of the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. It is a living memorial to those who served in the merchant marine and the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II and is a reminder of the role the merchant marine played in winning the war.
