Amplifying the hydro-electric power at Croton Dam According to the historical marker along the south side of the road that tops the Croton Dam, 110 years ago the first power was produced and visitors from European countries and Japan came to see the system in operation. This video clip on the last Saturday of July 2022 at noon shows one spillway is open to release pent-up water after bouts of heavy rain the past 10 days or so. With the emphasis on less fossil fuels to generate steam to spin electrical turbines, perhaps the latest gear of 2022 will make the output from this renewable resource even bigger. Forest versus plane, motocycle, helicopter, shooting range Gordon Hempton has made a career-sized quest for natural spots free from human noises. A generation ago about 15 locations in the continental USA fit his strict definition (15 minutes uninterrupted by people's sounds). More recently the number has dropped to just a few. At his website, <a href="http://www.soundtracker.com" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.soundtracker.com</a> there is a link to the "square inch of silence" challenge. This video clip is only a few seconds long, but is representative of this are near the south boundary of the Manistee National Forest about a mile from the North Country Trail start near the Croton Dam on the Muskegon River in west Michigan's Newaygo County. Only a moment of quiet passes before a car or truck passes on the paved (Croton) road further north. Other times during the day hike gunshots, jets, prop planes, helicopters, deafening motorcycles, and the shouts of possibly inebriated river float recreators interrupted the sounds of the woods: a dozen different bird voices, wind passing through evergreen needles and summer foliage, buzzing of winged insects, and the ambient hum of so much that is green and growing. River recreation Saturday at noon on the Muskegon Damage to the high-altitude ozone layer means that much more cancer-causing UV radiation pours down on exposed skin, most of all in the months when the sun tracks closest to its peak near the 45-degree latitude mark in summer. Even with sun blocking cremes of various power, UV cumulatively most damages skin of the youngest and oldest, whose dermal layers are thinnest. Not too many years in the future, along with other posted warnings to the public (don't eat too much fish per week due to harmful plastic microbeads and heavy metals, etc), perhaps there will be one about skin cancers and cataracts of eyes. But until then, those who find joy or comfort in mass company of others will still provide a living to the seasonal businesses that supply gear and transportation to vacationers on the weekend and during the school's summer holidays. Dog park fenced, equipped, and open for all The Brutus Dog Park bears images and statues of bulldogs. So it would seem that is the breed that the namesake was, too. In city after city since around 2000 pieces of land have been fenced and maintained for dog owners to let their pet roam unfettered by a leash. Some places segregate large breed from small breed, allowing those in-between to choose where their own dog best fits. With so many sharp teeth together at one time, it would seem to be a potentially dangerous situation when one dog misinterprets another's cues and bites or even worse. And then if a panicky owner intervenes, then the risk grows even bigger. Yet seldom do tragedies seem to happen or at least reach the local news desk. Exercise station near hospital in Big Rapids 7 August "Preaching to the choir" might be a suitable title instead, since the sizable proportion of the USA population that meets the clinical definition of overweight, obese, or morbidly obese is not especially likely to seek out this out-of-doors exercise site. Those who make use of the collection of devices and movement frames are already relatively accustomed to regular exercise. And while their activity here will benefit them, it is all the others who do not exercise frequently who really could gain something here. For an observer coming from a time in history before petrochemical-powered conveniences, when a good deal of force and energy came from the action of one's own (or draft animal's) muscles, the idea of a facility like this designed for rote muscle activity might seem odd. Ditto for a person visiting from a place in the world where people still transport themselves and their goods by sheer physical effort, this kind of cultural landscape must seem outlandish. Big fish near the river in downtown Newaygo, Michigan The artist, Lori Hough (lorihough.com), specialized in outdoor sculpture in wildlife themes. Exposure to the hot summers and the time of ice does require some maintenance by the city to keep the cement surface impervious to moisture, but apart from that slight care, the ensemble of steelhead trout is practically indestructible and should be part of the park-visitors' experience for a few generations. Thinking about the medium (ferro concrete: metal frame and cement exterior), there is a delicious irony in the delicate fiber of living fish but the mass of the sculpture; one depends on water, but the other is destroyed by it. But to the extent that the display spurs interest in art, public displays, and the life of fish in the nearby river past, present, and for generations to come, perhaps the enduring value off the artwork is to conserve the watery habitat for the fish, but by extension for humans, too, who also need water to live.
