PACKARD PROVING GROUNDS

Packard Proving Grounds is a historic site located in Shelby Township, Michigan, USA. Established in 1927 by the Packard Motor Car Company, it was used for testing and research of automobiles and engines until the company’s closure in 1958. The site spans over 500 acres and includes a number of buildings, test tracks, and workshops.

The main building on the site is the Engineering Building, which features a large garage area, offices, and a laboratory. It was designed by architect Albert Kahn and is considered a significant example of industrial architecture. The site also includes a clubhouse, a gatehouse, and a number of other buildings used for testing and research.

There are several test tracks on the site, including a 2-mile high-speed oval track, a 1.5-mile handling course, and a 0.5-mile acceleration and braking track. These tracks were used to test the performance and durability of Packard cars and engines, and also hosted racing events.

Today, the Packard Proving Grounds is open to the public for tours and events. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered an important part of the history of the American automobile industry.
