The Native Americans used their freshly crumpled leaves to stun fish so they could be easily gathered. They also used the seeds to attract doves, to catch them to eat. Pomo people - "shä'um" crushed leaves for stunning fish. Yuki people - "ē-chil' wä-ē-mök'" crushed leaves for catching fish. Konkow/Maidu people medicine, stun fish, seeds a lure of doves and wild turkeys. Spaniards - "Yerba del Pescado" fishing herb.
