COLONEL ASHLEY HOUSE

Colonel Ashley House is a historic building located in Sheffield, Massachusetts. It is a two-story, wood frame structure built in 1771 by Colonel William Ashley and his wife Elizabeth. Ashley was an extremely influential figure in the early days of the American Revolution, and the house was built to serve as his headquarters and residence during the war. The house has a gambrel roof and is surrounded by a manicured lawn and garden.

The interior of the house retains much of its original architectural details, such as wide pine floors, paneled walls, and a beehive oven. The house also contains many of Ashley’s original furnishings, including a four-poster bed, tables, chairs, and a desk. In addition, Ashley’s original library is on display, containing books on military strategy, religion, and history.

The house is now owned and operated by the Sheffield Historical Society, which maintains the house as a museum and visitors’ center. The house is open to visitors throughout the year and is a popular destination for those interested in learning about the early days of the American Revolution and the life of Colonel William Ashley.
