SYKESVILLE & PATAPSCO RAILWAY
WESTMINSTER, MD
The Sykesville & Patapsco Railway in Westminster, Maryland was an early railroad built in the late 19th century to provide freight and passenger service to the surrounding area. The railway was built to connect Sykesville, a small town located in southern Carroll County, with the Patapsco River in Baltimore County. The railway was built wholly within Maryland and was the first standard-gauge railroad in the state. It was also the first railroad in Maryland to use steam locomotives.
The railway was built as a 3-foot narrow-gauge line and was operated by the Sykesville & Patapsco Railway Company. It was constructed in 1901 and began operation in 1902. The line ran for about 12 miles and included stops at Patapsco, Pleasant Valley, and other small towns along the way. The railway was built primarily to transport coal and agricultural products from the region to larger cities in the area. It also provided passenger service, with the first passenger train running in 1902.
The Sykesville & Patapsco Railway operated until 1957, when it was taken over by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and eventually merged into the Western Maryland Railway. The railway was an important part of the transportation infrastructure in the area, providing access to the cities of Baltimore and Washington, DC. The railway was also a major contributor to the development of the local economy. Today, the remains of the railway can still be seen in the area, including parts of the original track that have been preserved.
