Annapolis - USNA Museum: Soverign of the Seas ship odel The ship model of Sovereign of the Seas, an English first rate 100-gun ship, was made by Henry Culver and Paul Chalfin between 1918 and 1920. The Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1637 and was the first three-decker, 100-gun ship ever built. The United States Naval Academy Museum, located at Preble Hall within the Academy campus, features two floors of exhibits about the development and role of the U.S. Navy, spread across area of 12,000 square feet with four galleries. The museum's history dates back to 1845, when it was founded as the Naval School Lyceum. In 1849, President James K. Polk directed the Navy's collection of historic flags be sent to the new Naval School at Annapolis for care and display, establishing one of the museum's oldest collections. The Naval Academy Lyceum of the 19th and early 20th centuries was located in several places around the Naval Academy Yard, before the construction of Preble Hall in 1939. From 2007–2008, Preble Hall underwent a complete renovation to turn the building into a modern museum, which officially reopened in the summer of 2009. He became renowned for his experiments with intstrumental that could navigate over water, leading to his work on the first US Navy flight across the Atlantic. Byrd would take part in three Antarctic expeditions, and consulted on many others. Annapolis - USNA Museum: Wooden Carousel Goat This is a rare and valuable carousel animal, made by the William F. Dentzel Company of Philadelohia, PA, in the period 1910-19. He id not make it for the Academy, but it nonetheless represents the USNA mascot affectionately named Bill. The Brigade purchased him in 1976, bur realizing it would be safer here, transferred it to the museum in 1978. Annapolis - USNA: Brigade Chapel - Farragut Window The Farragut Window, to the right of the altar in Brigade Chapel, shows Admiral David Farragut, in the rigging of the screw sloop-of-war USS Hartford, which he commanded to victory in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 below the mezzanine, and an angel guiding Farragut to victory above the mezzanine. The Farragut Window was conceived of by the class of 1890-1892 and presented in 1914 to honor the man who was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy at the age of nine and was the first admiral in the U.S. Navy. The window was designed by Frederick Wilson and fabricated by the Gorham Company. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. The chapel's copper dome, a focal point of not only the building and campus, but the city, with a cupola raising 193 feet above the main altar. On January 26, 1913, the remains of John Paul Jones' were interred in the crypt the chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter.
